Equirando 2025 obtains the EquuRES label

The 55th edition of Equirando in Bagnoles de l'Orne Normandie has been awarded the EquuRES Level 2 certification for the very first time.

What is the EquuRES label?

This is the first environmental and animal welfare label specifically tailored to equestrian events. It offers an eco-responsible approach suitable for all events in the equine sector.

Let's discover together the best practices put in place for this wonderful event 🐴🌳:

Equine welfare level:

  • Real-time monitoring of horses via a register;
  • Presence of a veterinary service and a farrier throughout the event;
  • Veterinary check at the entrance to the site with verification of identification (microchip, booklet, SIRE card);
  • Checking that vaccination protocols are up to date (including Rhino) and taking temperatures twice a day for 72 hours prior to arrival;
  • Isolation procedure in place in the event of a health issue;
  • Contacting RESPE to adapt protocols if necessary;
  • Permanent access to city water thanks to 33 tanks (1100L and 2200L) and refilling provided by 2 volunteers;
  • Anticipation and reinforcement of measures in the event of high temperatures, with water buckets and sponges and a shower available to cool the horses down if necessary;
  • 80 well-ventilated, modular temporary stalls available;
  • Presence of free-range and relaxation areas for horses;
  • Disinfection of stalls provided by a service provider;
  • Hand sanitizer available at key locations in veterinary clinics, blacksmith shops, and stables;
  • Equipment and tack inspection: scheduled checks and recommendations in the event rules to ensure the comfort, cleanliness, and safety of the horses (grooming, leatherwork, bits, sensible luggage);

Level of environmental preservation:

  • Locally sourced hay and straw;
  • Certified organic hay guaranteeing high-quality feed;
  • Suitable packaging: 10 kg bales + 450 kg big bags, facilitating management and limiting waste;
  • Redistribution of surplus produce and volunteer training in box management: surplus produce is donated and mulching is controlled, avoiding waste;
  • Well-organized visitor parking: signage in place, managed by volunteers, outdoor location to preserve the main site;
  • Site fully accessible on foot or by bicycle;
  • Dedicated bicycle area: clearly marked location to encourage sustainable transportation;
  • Encouraging carpooling and the use of public transportation: practical information provided to facilitate shared or sustainable travel for volunteers, participants, and horses;
  • Use of animal traction for waste collection. Horse-drawn carts collect manure and pack donkeys transport waste, in partnership with the Centre for the Promotion of Norman Breeds at the Haras du Pin stud farm. Center for the promotion of Norman breeds at the Haras du Pin stud farm;
  • Committed partnership for horse transport with Ogalo (partner of the EquuRES label), ensuring responsible and coordinated equine logistics;
  • Installation of timers and motion detectors in restrooms, and promotion of natural light usage;
  • Strong environmental partnerships thanks to collaboration with the ONF (French National Forestry Office) and the Regional Nature Park to organize the event;
  • Well-integrated selective sorting: different colored bins with clear signage are located throughout the site. Household waste, plastics, cardboard, and glass have clearly identified containers placed in strategic locations.
  • Implementation of a broad awareness campaign targeting participants, spectators, and professionals: best practices guide, announcements over the PA system, activities, round tables on animal welfare, demonstrations, and promotion of local breeds;
  • Varied and inclusive catering offer: full menus throughout the weekend, with vegetarian options always available (58 vegetarian menus planned);
  • Eco-friendly commitments: recyclable or reusable tableware, returnable cups, ban on single-use plastics in accordance with regulations;
  • Local products and short supply chains: use of restaurants and producers located within 100 km, with a commitment to local sourcing for several dishes;
  • Local food trucks and catering menus showcasing local specialties that highlight the region's heritage;
  • Partnerships with local accommodation providers that are easily accessible and close to the event.

A superb Norman edition!

Every two years, the French Equestrian Federation organizes Equirando, Europe's largest equestrian tourism gathering. For the 55th edition, compasses pointed to Bagnoles de l'Orne Normandie, a charming spa town in the heart of the Andaines Forest.

A look back at the official press conference

The Equirando 2025 press conference was held on Thursday 15 May at the Château-Hôtel de ville in Bagnoles de l'Orne Normandie. For the occasion, the press was invited to a presentation of this unique event, combining tourism, horse riding, outdoor activities and gentle itineraries.
